Summary

Historically, alternative sexualities -- including kink, BDSM, leather, and associated practices and groups -- has been an underfunded and marginalized research area. Even today much research addressing alternative sexualities is very modestly supported at the local institutional level or is self-funded. Expanding support, including funding opportunities, for alternative sexualities research requires development of research projects that are competitive with more established research areas. An important element of this is the development of a protocol -- i.e. a detailed written plan for the execution of research -- that meets the highest standards for well designed and ethically conducted research.

Drawing from fifteen years of CARAS experience in support of alternative sexualities research, this webinar will review regulatory requirements, resources, and suggested practices to aid investigators in development of study protocols that reflect carefully designed research.

Learning Objectives

1. Recognize guidelines and standards relevant to research protocol development (and reporting) including APA, ICH, CONSORT, STROBE;

2. Review key regulatory requirements and best practices applicable to research protocol development, including exempt vs. non-exempt research, IRB, informed consent, privacy and data confidentiality, and jurisdiction of regulatory frameworks including the U.S. Common Rule and EU GDPR;

3. Using the CARAS adaptation of the NIH Protocol Template for Behavioral and Social Sciences Research Involving Humans, review key research design elements found in a research protocol addressing alternative sexualities;

4. Apply knowledge using examples from the alternative sexualities research domain.
