Webinar Abstract

What is CARAS, what are they doing today, and is there anything that I might be interested in doing with CARAS?

The Community-Academic Consortium for Research on Alternative Sexualities (CARAS) was founded in 2005, formally incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit in 2006, and has undergone considerable development in its journey. CARAS started as a small group of researchers and community members interested in building resources to support excellence in alternative sexualities research — focused on kink, leather, BDSM, related sexwork, and consensual non-monogamy. Today CARAS continues with this mission as a multi-disciplinary, multi-program, community-engaged organization that is is international in scope.

In the first hour of this presentation we will provide an overview of the various programs of CARAS, including our academic conferences, Mentoring Program, Research Support Program, IRB, Reading Group, and initiatives planned for 2022-2024. Throughout its history, volunteers, including community members, academics, and clinicians, have been central to everything CARAS has accomplished and we would like to describe current volunteer opportunities and answer your questions about the organization!

—Can I do a presentation addressing Kink/BDSM/Leather/CNM that provides continuing education credit for psychologists and other health care professionals? YES!

The second hour is a workshop focused on how to develop a proposal for conferences or other training events that meets standards used by the American Psychological Association (APA) for granting continuing education (CE) credit for psychologists (usable by other health care professionals also). These criteria are generalizable to other disciplines and academic-professional presentation venues.

We will discuss the forthcoming CARAS Conference: Leather Kink Research and Clinical Knowledge (C2C) - West. The C2C “West” will be held in Los Angeles over Thanksgiving weekend 2022, November 25-27, 2022 - proposal submissions are due by Monday, September 5, 2022.

—Please join us to meet the CARAS staff, see what CARAS is doing, learn how CARAS might support your work or interests, and how you can volunteer to join the CARAS team!
